Meditation for Beginners 101: (small insight)
Have you ever driven home from school or work and realized you can’t recall details of the drive? You can’t even remember if you stopped at the light or what you passed along the way, but somehow you got home safely. Has this ever happened to you? Of course, we have all done this at one point or another.
This is what I like to call being on “auto pilot.” There is something inside of us that guides us, even when we aren’t conscious of it. Being in this auto pilot mode though doesn’t really serve us most of the time. It’s living unaware of the world around you, it’s called being asleep. When you live unconsciously, you allow yourself to let life just happen to you instead of taking control and creating the world you live in.
Learning Meditation, a Great Place to Start
Learning meditation can be an incredible tool that you can access just about any time or place that can help to awaken you to a deeper connection to the world. But I’m sure you are thinking to yourself, “I could never meditate, I can’t stop my mind from thinking so much.”
It’s a scientific fact that you have between 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day…so you can’t stop thought entirely with meditation or any other technique, or you would be brain dead, which is clearly not the goal in learning meditation. Some more food for thought as we examine meditation for beginners…
I think we proved in our little scenario earlier that you can “shut the mind down” a bit, just like you did when you were driving on auto pilot and couldn’t even remember the drive home.
This should give you hope that meditation is possible…the mind can calm down and have gaps between your thoughts that do bring an overwhelming sense of peace and serenity. The goal however is to learn simple methods so you can consciously slow the mind down, being fully “awake”, aware and present that you are doing so. This is opposite of being in auto pilot.

Learning Meditation Myths
I firmly believe that meditation can be achieved by anyone and everyone who chooses to do so. So many don’t even attempt to meditate because over time there have been some thoughts associated with mediation that keep them from doing so; this may be where you fall. In my most recent book, “Meditation for the Busy & Busy Minded”, I bust many of the preconceived myths associated with mediation…making it easier for you to understand first, what meditation is NOT.
Some of these myths might resonate with you:
- You must have NO thoughts to Meditate.
- Mediation requires you to subscribe to a certain religion.
- Meditation requires you to sit in lotus position.
- You better not fall asleep in meditation or you “did it wrong.”
- Meditation is a form of relaxing.
- Something miraculous is supposed to happen when you meditate.
- Meditation alters your state of mind.
- You will obtain psychic ability after meditating for a while.
- You will become enlightened after meditating.
- Mediation will fix all your problems.
Learning Meditation Health Benefits
Meditation to many seems kind of “out there” or perhaps I dare to say “woo-woo.” Rest assured, “woo-woo” or not, science has backed up the many health benefits in patients who meditate.
Meditation Health Benefits Include:
- Lowering Heart Rate
- Lowering Blood Pressure
- Engages Parasympathetic Nervous System
- Reduces Rapid Breathing
- Enhances Mood
That’s a very short list of course but just those alone you can see how your life can be positively effected with meditation from a scientific and medical standpoint. As if the health benefits aren’t enough to begin a meditation practice, there is one reason, that I believe trumps any benefit of meditation, and that is having peace through meditation.

Meditation is a Path to Liberation and Peace
Through the process of mediation you can achieve realization that the external self is just one part of who we are. Some would vouch to say it is even the “False” self. It is the part of us that that can be injured or crippled or decay when we pass…it is the “external” self. And then there is the Soul that is ever present and never changing..the “internal” self.
Meditation can help you realize that you are way more than your mind and so much more than your body. Through meditation you can be liberated from the lies that you tell yourself of who you are and become self realized… BE LIBERATED through Meditation.
